How To Get Free Movies On Our iphone!

May 30th, 2009 by admin

I’ve just transferred a recent version of NCIS to my iPhone (the one where Tony starts to snoop into Ziva’s personal life). And much to my delight, took less than 10 minutes to get the episode onto my iPhone. And I did it all for free!

Free iPhone moviesWell, I already had the NCIS episode in my files (more of that later). But I used the free version of TransferMy Video This is pretty cool software that converts video files to iPhone mode really fast and then loads them straight up to iTunes ready to sync to our iPhone.

Now, the free version does have a watermark right in the middle of the screen - which can be annoying. But I recommend you get it because its so easy to use: open  TransferMyVideo, click ‘browse’ to find the video file you want to watch on iPhone, click the image icon and choose ‘iPhone’, click ’start converting’.  - DONE! - And if the watermark annoys you - well, its pretty cheap software.

transfer my video to iPhoneWhen its finished (less than 10 mins for this 43 min show), iTunes opens up and the video is ready to sync to our iPhone. Best software I have ever used!! (I just spotted this promo for it - its only for the next couple of days, but its worth knowing about)

BTW - while it does rip DVDs, it will not rip ‘copy protected’ DVDs  - and let’s face it, these are the ones we want to watch! As for how to do this - and get other movies or TV shows that TransferMy Video can then put on our iPhones?  - well that’s a story for another day! No, seriously - we have been testing options over the last few weeks and will do a post on this shortly.

Iphone at the center of the universe!

What is it about the iPhone that motivates powerful people to make themselves available - through its interface - to the masses?

We saw the iPhone used effectively by Barack Obama to connect with the electorate during the last election campaign. We also wrote in a recent p[ost about the App that has been developed for the express purpose of promoting “transparency in government“. And the White House has provided us with video and audio podcasts of speeches and remarks by President and First Lady Obama and members of the administration to watch/listen to on our iPhones

The latest development on this front is the appearance of the Pope2You site along with the following free iPhone app - called H2ONews

screenshot_iPhone

The wrap on the site tells us:

Through H2Onews, the first video news application dedicated to the
Catholic world, you can follow the travels and speeches of Benedict
XVI, as well as key international ecclesiastical events.

We have the choice of receiving the news via video, audio or text. The app is a little clumsy, in that we have to connect our iPhone to the internet to receive the news download.

But the point is, really, to note that yet another ‘head of state’  is using this technology as a way to connect with the masses.  Again - its history in the making, people!

Beef Cooking GuideAs meaty as iTunes may be, there is still a big world out beyond those fair pastures - as today’s post will reveal!

Because today we are reviewing the revolutionary fact that the internet market has been discovered by farmers!

And they have responded by getting in on the direct marketing bandwagon. As the two sites previewed here show so clearly, they are offering premium products direct from-them-to-us (though - needless to say - at premium prices!)

Bone In Tenderloin FiletTo be fair, whilst this is a novel - if pricey - approach, these two sites do a great job of making mouths water.  Their images are vivid and inviting. And they are targeting the right people. The executive gift market, and the executive home are likely customers for their products.

Take La Cense Beef, for example, they are offering several benefits that just cannot be got from the local supermarket or even most specialist butchers. And with the advent of the smart phone, farmers have got smart enough to take advantage of the opportunity to directly regail us. And in this case they do seem to have a good story to tell us:

La Cense Beef is committed to a more natural and compassionate approach to ranching. We are not part of a consortium of ranchers, nor are we middlemen. We do the ranching, the selling and the packing. Our 100% grass-fed beef goes directly from our ranch to you. That’s how we can ensure its quality and guarantee your satisfaction.

We pride ourselves on using sustainable methods that have been around since our ranch began in 1869

And the fruitbasket has just as good a tale to tell. But before we get to that, just look at this great pic! And the descriptors they use include words like: fresh, handpicked,  local, crisp, certified organic….

So what is their story? Well, it is a goodun:

The Fruit Company has had incredible growth since those first days in Mr. and Mrs. Webster’s basement. Today The Fruit Company does much of its business through online orders, compared to their grandfather’s first mail-order catalog. While receiving outstanding attention from Oprah Winfrey’s “O” Magazine and the top consumer reporting magazine, The Fruit Company is also one of the top 15 growing companies in Oregon and part of Internet Retailer’s Top 50 “Best of the Web.”

Which revealed that - much to our surprise -  buying direct from the farmer is actually proving to be extremely popular.

The team here at iPhonegizmo have become curious:

Are we alone in feeling snowed under by the sheer volume of Apps - which is made worse by the difficulty of searching for Apps by function??” And are the apps meeting the needs of the iPhone user? Or are they, in fact, being developed by tech heads in the hope that - by some miracle - their App will be tried and then wanted?

To some extent thatthese questions are answered by a recnt survey conducted by iPhonegizmo, that revealed that nearly half those that responded had downloaded over 40 apps!

iPhone Apps Survey

But the push to develop apps is ferocious and the returns very uncertain. Consider this add currently in Elance:

We’ve just released our first application, and the results have been less than spectacular with our own marketing efforts.

This is followed by a description of their marketing efforts to date - which include (among a variety of described efforts): posting regularly to their 10,000+ twitter followers and a youtube video where they are promoting a $1,000 video contest. And still they have not had success! It’s a tough gig getting apps even tried!

But is the problem that they are not finding out what we want BEFORE they rush off to develop their App?

Well, we thought we would find out - so check out our next post and let us know what you think!

Over 300,000 Free Songs For Our iPhones!

May 10th, 2009 by admin

Well, here I am down under - and as the pic below shows, I am currently at the famous Manly beach in Sydney! But rather than surfing - as I expected to be (remember I promised a pic to prove it!), I am sitting in the magnificant recently renovated Manly Pacific LOOKING at - well, not waves as there aren’t any - but deep blue water and beautiful blue skies (pretty happy with the photo taken by my iPhone.)

Manly Beach View from the Manly Pacific

Beach View from the Manly Pacific

The waves would have been wasted on me anyway as I am down-and-out down under! (No, not with swine flu - though that illness flew behind me as we traveled and the first confirmed case here has just been announced on the news)

So just a quicky post today. Here is a great site to explore over the weekend. Soundclick has over 300,000 creative commons licenses (musicians let us download their music for free) that allow us to download free music to iTunes. Just become a member (free) and then select “creative commons” from the drop down menu under “License” and choose the genre of music you like - and go explore the thousands of songs on offer. When you find one you like, just click “full” to go to the link that will allow it to be downloaded to iTunes.

What are iPhone downloads? and how to get them!

May 1st, 2009 by admin

Traditionally, when people were searching for “iPhone downloads”, they were looking for free (or a better/wider range of) music, movies, videos, TV shows, iPhone games - and to a lesser extent, ring-tones, wallpaper, and software than was available from iTunes.

iTunes alternativestall-spacer.jpgBut with so many free games and apps (and wallpapers, to some extent) in iTunes, people are now mostly looking for music, movies and TV shows - which are rarely free or cheap from iTunes - and soon become a big expense if purchased there!

Fortunately, the “buy/rent every single media file” model that iTunes uses is just way of delivering music and movies - and the most expensive!

Others include:

1) One-fee “membership sites” - now largely outlawed as they encourage illegal downloading (and claim they have thousands of free music, movie etc files for us to download.) Some are still around but are mostly run “offshore”. Which means they are out of the laws reach - but we are not!

iPhone TVtall-spacer.jpg2) Legal membership sites - that require monthly membership fees for us to have access to all their music (and sometimes movies and TV shows). Check this example from our many archives.

3) Free music/media sites. These include sites that provide a platform for new artists to upload their music and/or videos and make them available to us for free. These also include “Creative Commons License” (free license) But because music is so profitable -there are big players who spend BIG bucks trying to shut down any and all sites that offer free music to us! Check out what happened to one of our favorites - Seeqpod. Also check out this example ( click Jamendo) from our many archives.

tall-spacer.jpg 4) Another model is illustrated by those sites that make media free but we must watch adds before we can view the video/movie or listen to the music. Check this example from our many archives.

5) Then there is the whole array of sites that provide some free iPhone downloads (like ring-tones, wallpapers etc) - and survive (just! in these tough economic times) by placing ads in the near vicinity of these free downloads, or by collecting our email addresses and then marketing to us by sending us emails. Check this example from our many archives.

If you browse through our categories you will find a rich selection of sites from which you can get iPhone downloads - from freebies through to memberships sites through to the ad-supported delivery model.

We currently favor the “free trial” method of getting free iPone downloads. But more on that in our next post.
