Jailbreaking Our iPhones Is Now Legal?

July 30th, 2010 by admin

iPhone Jailbreak

According to GeeksAreSexy.com, the latest decision handed down from the Copy Right Office, means that:

Jailbreaking your phone to use lawfully obtained software (i.e., you can put Google voice on your iPhone if you want to):

is now legal!

Does that mean you should go out and jailbreak your iPhone? Well, according to Google, 4 million people a month are thinking about it!. But there are disadvantages as well as advantages in jailbreaking your iPhone.

One of the main advantage of jailbreaking our iPhone is that we can use a different network provider (eg T-Mobile, etc). Another is that we can use non-Apple/iTunes  software.

The main disadvantage remains that Apple will disown us - our warranty may be void if we jailbreak our iPhone.

Still, its worth knowing that we can legally make the choice to jailbreak our iPhone if we want to!

35 Free Comic Books For iPhone Download!

July 24th, 2010 by admin

To celebrate the Comic Con event, the iPhonegizmo team went looking for free comic downloads for iPhones. We revisited a previous post about free comics for iPhone download and got a great lead for 35 more free comics - some as big as 35 pages!

These freebies are available from  Comixology - a site that has specialized in providing comics for delivery on our iphones. Some of the comics that are included on the 35-for-freebie list are: Superman, Batman Black and White, Wanted, and Box 13 plus another 31 free comics are up for grabs.

There are several Free iPhone apps for Marvel, DC Comics,  and quite a few others. Marvel offer a half dozen free comics but  have not really put much effort into optimizing them for the iPhone platform. At least the one we downloaded (Ultimate Ironman II) whilst beautifully illustrated was not easy to read on the iPhone, with repeated - slow loading - need for us to switch from the vertical to the horizontal screen and no apparent effort to make the words legible!

In complete contrast, the free DC Comic downloads were excellent. There were more than a dozen and they were very easy to read on the iPhone.

So guys - if you are a comic fan - go check out the free comic apps and grab yourself some free comic downloads.

Comic Con For iPhone Downloads

Official Comic-Con App

Comic Lovers from around the planet are descending on San Diego for the Comic Con 2010 event that is starting today. And those that can’t make it are drooling from afar (BTW, the free Comic Con iPhone App can help us do that).Because this event has it all - if you are a comic lover/nerd! The special guest line up is enough to make those not able to get there weep! They have:

some of the hottest creators in the world of comics, ranging from the mainstream to the alternative…. also, of course, featuring Golden and Silver Age creators, sf/fantasy writers and artists, and longtime Comic-Con friends.

OK, you say, “enough of this blather, I want names, baby!” And there are some to make you green with envy!

Neal Adams - Legendary comic creator - prime mover on Batman, X-Men, Green Lantern/Green Arrow, and Deadman.

Matt Fraction - from Marvel, works on Immortal Iron Fist, Punisher War Journal, Uncanny X-Men, etc. He and artist Salvador Larroca won the 2009 Eisner Award for ‘Best New Series’ for Invincible Iron Man.

Stuart Immonen - also a Marvel marvel has worked for a lot of top comic publishers on such comics as Nextwave, Superman: Secret Identity and Ultimate Spider-Man. “Stuart is currently the top-selling artist on Marvel’s New Avengers“.

Comic Con 2010

The line up of star artists, writers, producers and publishers is too huge to list here but that gives you an inkling - check out the full program of special guests on the comic con site.

OK - but if you are a comic lover/ love-the-TV-show kind of follower, then you are going to be more interested in those kind of stars. And there are plenty of them as well!

For example, on Saturday at 10:00-10:45 there is a Chuck screening and a chance to talk to the producers and all the series stars including (of course) Zachary Levi, plus Yvonne Strahovski and Adam Baldwin etc. Here is a great opportunity to find out about the upcoming season four (thanks to the devoted fan base) plus there will be a special video presentation.

This is a massive event - so check out the site - or get the free App to find out more.

Nothing To Do With iPhone Downloads

All the same, we just have to comment on the advertising revolution that is currently taking place on YouTube. The first video ad in this revolutionary series was posted to YouTube back in February and has since had 0ver 14 million views! Another was posted just two weeks ago and has already had over 8 million views.

In the last week, however, a whole new genre of YouTube ads have been generated. Old Spice have posted over 200 YouTube videos in the past week! Each video ‘ad’ is a response to a twitter post. And following one may be the most brilliant ad ever made:

We posted the Susan Boyle YouTube video when it had had just 3 million views (in 3 days) - it has since had over 44 million views).  Don’t be surprised if the old Spice ads have the same kind of end result! You can find more to watch on the Old Spice YouTube channel.

OK - so this post is not about iPhone downloads - but you CAN enjoy these YouTube Videos - for free -  on your iPhone. So stop complaining!

Best Free Music iPhone App Now Also For iPad

Shazam

A year ago we included the Shazam app in our list of top thirty iPhone apps. At that time Shazam had been reviewed by a massive 100K users and managed an impressive 3.5 star rating. Impressive because it is difficult to keep that many users happy - much more likely that differences in interests will spread the ratings and result in lower scores!

We are in the process of putting together a new list of the current top 10 apps and decided to check out how those in last years list were doing, today. Impressively, Shazam has been rated by a further 200K users since our report 12 months ago and has maintained its 3.5 star rating.

So if you are a new iPhone owner (or have just joined the Apple family as an iPad owner), we recommend you download this free app and try it out.

For the benefit of those that are not familiar with the app, it identifies the song that are playing on the radio or (more often) a video:

Just point your iphone towards the music source to identify track

If you are keen, the app makes it so that you can even then buy the MP3 from iTunes. But we think its just a really useful way to ID that tune! And obviously we are not alone!
