Apologies to all iPhonegizmo FANS and check out this freebie!

August 16th, 2011 by admin

The iphonegizmo team apologizes for the lengthy “holiday” we were forced to take over the last three weeks. This is the first time since its inception four years ago that our site has ever been “off the air” for any reason. So you could say the holiday was overdue!

Air Playit - Streaming Video to iPhone

However, it was an unplanned holiday- so we missed out on all the fun of looking forward to it!

We are now back and atem  - and will be doing our usual posts about hot new iPhone download freebies for you.

To kick the show off, we recommend you take a look at this great deal - a super easy way to get movies onto your iphone to watch - for free!! (Of course)

You will need to download the free Air Playit App from iTunes and also need to download the “cloud-based” Air Playit server to your desktop (works with both PCs and Macs. Then, wherever you are - if you can access wifi,  you can down load a movie from your PC/Mac to your iPhone and watch it at your leisure!

e:A couple of helpful pointers for you so that you get this great free movie downloader with ease.

1) TheAir Playit  site is quite busy. Take a look at the image below to see where to go to download the server software you need:

2) Either follow our link to the app -or make sure you spell it right in iTunes - its “Air Playit”. iTunes has gotten sloppier as its gotten bigger and if you type in, for example,  “Airplayit”, you will be served up everything BUT the app you want!

3) Follow the directions given on the site in their User Guide

Note: we found we had to disable the firewall for the connection between the local server and the iPhone to work.

Oh, BTW - Air Playit does not support media files purchased from iTunes  (and so are protected by DRM). Apparently,  the next version will support DRM protected videos.

Enjoy!

Selction of Legal Free Music From Various Music Genres

June 3rd, 2011 by admin

The iPhonegizmo team has been out scouring the internet for quality free music that is currently on offer - usually as part of a promo for a new album. We think we offer a great service because there are still quite a few spammy (to downright risky) sites out there that dangle free MP3s as bait to the unwary! So, in addition to the $10 worth of free music we have previously referred readers to - we have another 10 free songs here.

We deliberately looked for a wide range of free MP3s - partly so that we could have something for everyone (we have a very wide audience of readers) and partly to give you a taste of music beyond that which you might normally try. Take for example the free MP3 from the German singer -  we think she has a gorgeous voice and worth listening to despite it being in another language:

Get the free Joy Denalane MP3 here

Other free songs are:

Michael Bennett with She’s So Fine

The Taiga band with Ocean

Rendon with The Song Of Illumination

Thrills Band with If You Want Me To Love Ya

All Else Failed with Did You Think Of Me

Mumford ans Sons with Sigh No More

Voyager with Lost

Trevor Moss and Hannah Lou with The Passing of Time

Collie Buddz with Playback

Our selection covers genres from hard rock, through reggae, soul, folk, pop and rock and roll. Don’t like our cool selection? Then pick your own - you can get ten free songs of your own choice here.

A Royal iPhone Wedding!

April 27th, 2011 by admin

A royal wedding seems to get everyone’s heart a fluttering. All that pomp and ceremony - I mean glamor -  around true love at its best…..

And doesn’t the media love it! And travel companies, and wedding planners … anyone who stands to make a buck from the masses of people lining up to watch or participate. And iTunes is no different - if you are in the UK, or Australia or (as it turns out) in Canada. iTunes has the Royal Wedding front-and-center on the iTunes store for these three countries:

A Royal iPhone Wedding!

But iTunes is betting that we in the US are not so interested as  the closest we get to anything UK-ish is “Harry Potter” on the front page!

A Royal iPhone Wedding!

But are American’s really not that interested?

Well, there are 74 royal wedding related apps for iPhoners in UK iTunes store, there are 71 royal wedding related apps in the iTunes Canadian store, and there are over 76 royal wedding related apps available (serious and comedic) in the USA iTunes store.

You work it out!

Some freebies on offer that are worth getting include:

NBC app for the wedding

BBC America’s royal wedding insider app

Hello Magazine app for the Royal wedding And for Canbadians,

And for Canadians, there is the Globe and Mail’s new mobile app bringing the news of the big day for Prince William and Kate Middleton.

Oldies But Goodies - Free iPhone Games

February 3rd, 2011 by admin

In February two years ago we did a review of free iPhone games available at that time (can you believe it, the number of iPhone games had just reached 1000!!) We paid particular attention to the free games listed in the top ten in iTunes. We found that the ones listed in iTunes may have had a lot of downloads but often had poor ratings. In fact the iPhonegizmo team concluded at that time that most free games were a waste of time to download.

However, we did find several that were ranked well by users:

Top Free iPhoneGames (rated by users as 3.5 stars or better):

Bounce On Lite free iPhone game

1) iShoot Lite - 4 stars (Released Dec 08 );
2) Galcon lite - 3.5 stars (Released Sep 08);
3) Bounce On Lite - 3.5 stars (Released Jan 09);
4) Fastlane Street Racing Lite - 3.5 stars (Released Jan 09),
5) Downhill Bowling Lite - 3.5 stars (Released Feb 09);
6) Trace - 3.5 stars (US) (Released Oct 08)
7) Tap Defence - 3.5 stars (US) (Released Nov 08)

These games are still free, still have the same (or better) ratings and most have been updated since Dec 2010.

And just to add a more current flavor - if you haven’t already got it- go try “Cut the Rope“  - it is one of the best free games out there.

New Free iPhone App for Wine Lovers and would-be Connoisseurs

January 26th, 2011 by admin

Another recently released iPhone app that we consider news worthy is the Vivino app that has some pretty cool features. Firstly it is built with “recognition software” that allows us to use the iphone camera to photograph the wine label on the bottle and then send the image  to the Vivino data base. Second, the image is then checked against some hundreds of thousand wine labels stored in the Vivino database.

If the wine is in the database (1 in 3 chance at time of app release - and growing daily) then it will show on the screen with any ratings given by other users. With a simple click, we can add the wine to our own personal list along with our own rating for a permanent record of wines that we love or hate!

We can also, depending on our passion for wines,  add wines to the Vivino database in a collaborative effort to get every wine in the world listed there!

Salut!
