Free iPhone Apps that Rock!

January 15th, 2011 by admin

For something a little different, we are sharing today some apps we came accross when exploring LinkedIn …. yes LinkedIn! You have to know how to search it (a secret we may share with you in a later post) but if you know how to do it, you can find some veeery interesting stuff.

On this occasion we did a search that included”iphone apps”, and had another universe of apps revealed to us! The first one we wanna share is one that this particular guy did the video for:

FYI, the App is called “Museum Explorer“. Now, I did NOT know that “Lucy” was at the American Museum for Natural History did you? (LOL - I bet you don’t even know who Lucy is, do you?)

Free iPhone App Museum Explorer

And I did not know they had a REX, either. So, next time I get the chance, I’m gonna go there and have a look. And how cool is that ’something-a-saurus’ in the entrance foyer - reminds me of Jurassic Park (only nicer). This is a free app, so go grab yourself something different!

Some other apps in this genre include:

Musée du Louvre

MEanderthalThe Museum of Modern Art App,

MEanderthal from the Smithsonian,

Or the  app from the Musee Du Louvre (left)

So grab some culture folks - these great apps are all free. Unfortunately, some other museum apps are not free so are not included here. But if you are about to travel somewhere where they have a really top notch museum - eg The British Museum ($4.99), then it is worth checking to see if there is an iPhone app for it.

iPhone Checkpoints

January 12th, 2011 by admin

If you haven’t yet tried the fascinating App called Checkpoint, or you have but are one of the few why were not impressed- we suggest that you give it (another) try. Checkpoints have just released a new version of the App and it has already received a solid 4-star rating (with more than half rating it as a 5-star app) and that’s from over 500 people who have downloaded the new app in the last 4 days.

And there is good reason for this strng positive response. Check out why we are impressed:

With this app you can begin to start getting bonuses when you shop. This is in addition to any points you already collect from using your credit card to shop etc. The app also lets you know which brands and which products IN THE STORE you are shopping in, offer bonus points. Could not be easier. There are all sorts of bonuses/rewards  on offer including - if you prefer - the option to give the rewards to select charities.

Here is the comment we found from one recent rater of Checkpoints with a very useful tip included:

I just got a $25 itunes gift card by using the app checkpoints!! It is free and when u first register (free) and enter the code tkoytime55 then u can get a free gift card!! Merry christmas!!

We think its great but are keen to know what others think of it - so let us know in the comments below.

TextNow - Unlimited Free Texting and Picture Messaging (SMS & MMS)

The TextNow app allows free text and picture messaging to any phone in the USA - and whats more the APP is FREE as well. It used to be $7.99 and is now free.Even with a price tag attached this app has been well received with the latest version getting a massive 50% of raters giving it the 5 star rating (few apps do that well). Check out some of the comments

Its the best I activated the textnow voice and its awesome.(emmanuel4)

It’s awesome….. Period!(Vegan chick)

This is so cooool! I luv it:) just wish u didn’t need wifi. (Noisy mouse)

You just have to bear in mind that while the service is free for unlimited text and picture messages, that is because the service is paid for by either

1) the use of advertising or

2) the  pay-per-ad-removal subscriptions - which cost $0.99 for a 1-Month ad removal or $5.99 for a 1-Year ad removal.

Still,  given the rave reviews and the fact that the app is FREE, we figure it is worth it to give it a try and see if you like it. Free unlimited texting- what’s not to love!

iPhone Apps Used to Create Trick Videos?

December 3rd, 2010 by admin

We recently did a post on a video that - at that point - had only about 4ooo views. We openly questioned the authenticity of the vid and suspected that it was a blatant attempt at viral marketing (for those romantics who can be easily impressed?). Well, it turns out we were right.

Apparently our star from an earlier post - none other than Michael Krivicka - also did this “romantic” video (how ironic, that we had done a previous video on a prank iPhone app and this one turns out to be by him as well). As this video currently has over 400,000 views, the guy obviously has a talent for these kinds of viral vids.

But not everyone is impressed by his penchant for trickery. Mr Krivicka is treading a slippery slope, because while he is getting results he is also generating angst among other online users:

In viral efforts the same thing is happening, but you believe the message is genuine due to your trust in the messenger.  This technique has become a very a profitable form of promotion – and deceit.

The video is charming, too bad it’s not genuine.  Trust and honesty are tried and true techniques that withstand the test of time, and all marketing fads (Adam Rosen, Cult of Mac)

Funnily enough,  recent research reveals that honesty is less important to people than cleverness. Perhaps Mr Krivicka knows this? What do you think folks?

We love nothing better than to let our readers know about a cool FREE apps that are as yet undiscovered by the masses! We think that this app is a beauty. The app allows us to make business cards (including using photos) and to share simply by shaking our iPhone near another smart phone! Check out the demo:

The apps is called Card Shake  and is free. There is a great site to back the app - so go check it out.

iPhone Downloads Mayhem About to Hit!

Do you love a good deal? Well, this is a quick post to alert you to keep an eye out for our next post, because we have an offer (and we cannot post it till Wed) that will save you over $30 on some pretty hot-to-trot apps.

Scanner Pro: scan multipage documents, upload to Dropbox and Evernote

Just to whet your anticipation - the apps do some pretty impressive tasks…. including a pocket scanner (what can’t an iPhone do?) and a book reader app.  And they are all normally expensive apps - but none will cost more that .99c for the time of the sale. Now regular readers will know that we usually ONLY post about freebies. But this is such an impressive slae that we have decided to let everyone know about it.

But wait, there’s more… because if you buy one of these super cheap apps, you can then go into a contest run by the app developers to win 3 iPads.

OK, check back on Wed to get all the details of this super deal. :)

What does LOVE and “special iPhone Apps” have in common?

October 25th, 2010 by admin

Well, Frank and Kasey, you have got our attention, so don’t keep us in suspense!

Clearly this cute little video has been staged (well that’s the iPhonegizmo team consensus, but the more romantic are still arguing its legit!) But what we want to know is:

“Is the mention at the start and finish of special iPhone apps a telling inclusion?”

Is this a PR stunt aimed at promoting a new iPhone app? Take a look and see what we mean:

What do you think? Staged or real romance in action? And if its staged, is there enough drama to capture attention and push it viral? And what the heck type of iPhone app are they gonna launch?

We’ll keep you updated (yeah, we are obviously suckers for this kind of thing)
