iPhonegizmo recently hunted the internet in search of genuine “free iphone” contests. Along the way we also found sites that were advertising “free” iphones but it actually cost money or mucho time to get them. These were not included in the post.
But just so you know what to watch out for, here is great example of an offer where you really do need to read the small print. At first glance it looks great. We were keen. Started answering the questions then got to this page:
Hmmm… We could not think of any good reason to provide a mobile number. Alarm bells rang … we checked the small print (follow the arrow!) and found:
*……Customers, who enter their personal pincode on the website in order to sign up are agreeing to become subscribers. By signing-up for and/or using the service you acknowledge and confirm that you have read the terms & conditions, that you are a Canadian resident and authorized account holder and/or that you have the consent of the account holder. Wixawin operates under the Canadian code of conduct for SMS services and offers unique entertainment for your mobile. To cancel the service please send ’stop’ to 88588. …….

Now, this contest is not advertised as free.
But, equally, its not at all clear that by providing our mobile number we are agreeing to become a sunscriber and that we will have to pay $2 per question to enter!
Having read the small print you may be happy to pay. But - that’s a choice that we at iPhonegizmo figure you want to know you are making!

This is a fun app that is now available for iPhone users. It allows us to stay in touch with our friends or family as they go about their wanderings. Buddy Beacon is an app that runs on our iPhone and allows us to see where they are.
But, because we (or they) may not always want to be “seen” we can always choose to keep them “in the dark” by not reporting where we are!!
According to the folks at Buddy Beacon:
Buddy Beacon uses the GPS in your phone to pinpoint your location. You can let your friends know what you’re doing at that location (i.e. working, eating, sleeping, etc.) or you can pick a place that’s close to you to set as your location. You can also view your location on a map to see where your friends are in relation to you or view your Buddy List to check the location of a specific friend. By blocking your friends, they won’t be able to see your location until you unblock them. Don’t worry, Buddy Beacon won’t automatically update your location, unless you tell it to.

With Buddy Beacon on the iPhone, we can also ‘Nudge’ our buddies to get them to update their location.
We can also use Buddy Beacon through Facebook which allows us to connect with our non-iPhone buddies easily.

Fed up with the limitations of your iPhone camera? Not really interested in doing the paper clip /masking tape hack outlined in an earlier post? Then Snapture’s fantastic free apps is sure to capture (heh heh) your enthusiasm!
Now, not all software developers are impressed with Apple SDK deal (where software developers have get Apple approval for their iPhone applications). So they just go right ahead develop their neat apps and find other - often free - ways to get them to us.
Snapture is an example. This is a major upgrade for iPhone users who want to get some decent results with their iPhone camera - and did we mention, its absolutely free! With this app we can now: zoom in to get the perfect shot; take up to three rapid frame shots; vary the size of the photo; use time delay to take shots of ourselves with our friends … and more

iPhoneGizmo decided to go on the hunt for genuine ways to get a free iphone. Now, there is “no such thing as a free lunch” - so there is always some work to be done - sign up for a trial, review something, design something….So if you are creative, have some spare time or even enjoy playing games here is a list of sites that offer a legit chance of winning an iPhone:
LIST BUILDERS:
(These sites require that you give your own name, address, phone number and email for a chance to win an iphone:
(1)Onecomare also requires that you answer two easy questions for a chance to win an iphone.(UK only),
(2)This student loan site also requires that you answer a few questions and you are entered with a chance to win an iphone (US only)!
(3) Computerarts just wants the answer to one question to enter for a chance to win an iphone and
(4) Telecom has a free iphone contest going for anyone who creates a free jobseeker account!
DESIGN BASED CONTESTS:
If you are a talented designer then these two competitions may be your way to get a free iPhone.
(5)Wiredscience requires participant to submit a video, ad or T-shirt design for a chance to win $2500 or an iPhone.
(6)There is also the International Poster DesignCompetition by iStockPhoto and U Printing - began March 1st - so better hurry for this one!

Now your iphone can get even more usefull! Want to know what song is playing on the radio? 
With this great hack, you can find out that and more. Put your iphone near the radio speakers and check out the iphone screen. Admitedly, its currently in Beta. But if it works, then you will see the song, artist, and album all listed. (It samples the music for 5 seconds and then attempts to contact the id server).
Makes it easy to find that great song again - whether just to listen to or to download, right!

A week ago txtdrop.com celebrated its 1millionth text message sent through its interface. iPhone users have helped to create this success as 500,000 of these messages have been sent in just the last 6 months since iphone was launched. Txtdrop is one of the largest providers of free text messaging service.
