Free TWiT Network Live Streaming TV Show On Our iPhones

August 26th, 2010 by admin

Its random, unplanned and amateurish - but strangely compelling. The show is called this WEEK in TECH, or TWiT. It has several radio-presenter-types all gathered together (in person or via Skype) that chat about the week’s tech news and other related gossip on live streaming TV. Take a look at one of today’s shows and to see whether you want to get the free App:

Watch live video from TWiT Live on Justin.tv

The free app is called JustinTV Now there are some game-based channels also available to watch via this app - but they are very targeted in the audience they appeal to - so not much use to most of us!But the TWIT Network is gold! Go get it!The team here predicts that JustinTV will get BIG. This is just the start and it is so far relatively undiscovered by those that love to entertain.

Best Free Music iPhone App Now Also For iPad

July 16th, 2010 by admin

Shazam

A year ago we included the Shazam app in our list of top thirty iPhone apps. At that time Shazam had been reviewed by a massive 100K users and managed an impressive 3.5 star rating. Impressive because it is difficult to keep that many users happy - much more likely that differences in interests will spread the ratings and result in lower scores!

We are in the process of putting together a new list of the current top 10 apps and decided to check out how those in last years list were doing, today. Impressively, Shazam has been rated by a further 200K users since our report 12 months ago and has maintained its 3.5 star rating.

So if you are a new iPhone owner (or have just joined the Apple family as an iPad owner), we recommend you download this free app and try it out.

For the benefit of those that are not familiar with the app, it identifies the song that are playing on the radio or (more often) a video:

Just point your iphone towards the music source to identify track

If you are keen, the app makes it so that you can even then buy the MP3 from iTunes. But we think its just a really useful way to ID that tune! And obviously we are not alone!

MixCloud vs iTunes?

September 22nd, 2009 by admin

Launched a couple of days ago, chat about MixCloud has been clogging up the Twitterway - a sure sign that the site has excited a lot of interest. Catch phrases are being circulated (by the people over at MixCloud) like “the YouTube of Radio” and “Rethink Radio” - an online destination site for on-demand radio shows. We say “over”, because this is a UK invention. But, hey, don’t hold that against them because the site does offer access to a lot of free music! To understand just what they are about, check out the following video:

As with YouTube, anyone can upload music (or anything audio) to the site and listeners decide who gets heard - who gets featured.

Old Time Favorite

And, like any self respecting music site, it has all the usual social media built in so that users can share and discover with friends.

Current “featured” Cloudcasts (chosen by Mixcloud and guest editors) are: Mad Decent; BestivalradioCheap Thrills Radio ShowOpen Thread Radio;  Women Are Mammals; and, Old Time Favorite.

Check it out and let us know what you think?

Just another music site, or something a more?

iPhone Play - Or Something More Important?

This post does not have any links to free iphone music/radio, or to free iphone movies/videos/TV shows, or to free iphone ebooks.  While the iPhonegizmo team works hard to bring you great links to quality free downloads for your iPhone (see the above links for some of these posts), this post is just for fun!

One of our team came accross this video, and  we reckon this may be a sign of the next stage of technology. iPhones have been adopted by the armed forces - so its technology has the respect of top tech users, not just us consumers. But, this video shows the iphone being used as a component in a “higher order” unit - the next stage evolution??

Do iPhone Medical Apps need some healing?

August 9th, 2009 by admin

iphone medical appsThe team here has taken a look at the free medical apps that have been developed for iPhones. Much to our surprise we found that a big percentage of these apps have been given terrible ratings! This was true for apps that - by their name and intent - we thought would be super useful. Apps like those that offer to keep track of medications, orbe a quick guide to ailments. Quick fix medical Apps do not seem to be well received.

On the other hand, there are many specialist apps developed for medical practitioners that got the thumbs up from the medical profession.

Perhaps this just shows that when it comes to health, the apps have to be sophisticated to really be of value. All the same, there were 14 out of the first 100 medical apps that got good ratings (3 stars or better) and were for use by the general public rather than the medical profession. All are listed below but we have showcased those we liked, or got hot star ratings:

uHear 3.5star  8 Glasses a Day 3 star Eye Chart 3 star Relax 3 star Med Calculator 3 star Bone Knowledge 3 star Web MD Mobile 3.5 star Eye Chart 3 star

The Asthma Journal allows sufferers to keep a daily journal to keep track of their symptoms, potential triggers and medication. So far has a 4-star rating but is a new app.

iPot Lite is the first location-based medical marijuana application for the iPhone and has been well regarded with a 3.5 star rating

Easy to see why Baby Daily Log has gotten a  3.5 star rating as it can monitor diaper changes, feeding, bath and tummy time, sleep and wake schedules and records baby’s stats like height, weight and temperature (just click the top icon to get this free app from iTunes).

iphone medical appsiphone medical appsFertility and Pregnancy Calculator works out your important fertility and -pregnancy dates and must be good as it has a 3.5-star rating! Sleep Diary helps insomnia sufferers to find out what is keeping them awake! This app helps us work out what factors - eg diet, exercise and medications - affect our sleep (has got a 3- star rating)

The final app in our list is the Diabetes Manager that can help diabetics to keep track of their glucose results, carb intake and insulin doses. It also provides charts and graphs to help with management. So far has a 5-star rating, so is a super well received app!

Well, you get the idea! When you use the search strategy we showed you in a recent post you can quickly find medical apps that suit your needs. Just check the ratings below the images to see what others that have used the app have to say about it.

iPhone Radio

July 26th, 2009 by admin

,

We have discovered - though our fan mail - that a lot of iPhone owners have trouble navigating iTunes. Now this comes as no surprise, as it is not a reflection of Apples usual high quality in design (and does leave us wondering whether there is an unseen purpose in such a user unfriendly store front!)

Anyway, today we decided to show you some simple tools, that make using iTunes a little easier. And we decided to show you how to find free iPhone radio Apps as an example.

It turns out that there are over 200 free iPhone radio Apps. So it is definitively useful to know how to find just these Apps. To do this you need to click on the “store” drop down menu at the top of iTunes and select “search”. That will open a search bar where you have the option of choosing what part of iTunes you want to search.

iPhone Radio

We chose to search the  apps store - so we clicked on that.

iPhone Radio

Another search bar then opens that provides us with several more detailed options: title, developer, category, and device.  This allows us to get very specific about what we want to search for.

iPhone Radio

In our case, we want radio apps - so just typed  “radio” into the “Title/Description” bar, put a tick in the “search only for free applications”, chose the “entertainment” category and clicked search. That produced 250 results - most of which are radio apps (well, it is iTunes, so there are going to be some wronguns in there!) The first few from the list are shown below!

iPhone Radio

Our bet is that you will find at least one radio app that will suit your needs from this list. We like the iheartradio app that has the cool widget we have at the top of this post - simply because we enjoy the Daily Obama News Fix - and the discussion that goes with it.

New Way to Get Free iPhone Music Downloads

July 19th, 2009 by admin

Why is it that software developers make their offerings so user unfriendly? And their “help” menus so that they don’t help? Doing the reviews on the best ways to download free movies to our iPhones was a real nightmare, as we had to download and trial  a stack of software - most of which made no attempt, it seemed to us, to make their software easy to use for the average user!

,

Now, we really want to let you know about this great new way to get legal free music for your iPhone (and iPod). Potentially, all the music you could ever want! But……

The darned thing is another bit of software that is not intuitively easy to use. Having said that, its free to download and try out the software - so it only costs a bit of time to explore and see whether you like it - and, whats more,  the free version lets us download 40 MP3s of our own choosing! AND - like all free software, there is no demand for credit card details etc. SO free means free!

Here is the blurb on the way it works:

“To find the music you want to download simply select your favorite artists, add them to the MusicFinder’s wish list and Radiotracker will do the rest! It downloads the matching MP3 music as soon as it’s played on any of 2000 continually monitored Web radio stations. And you won’t wait long for your music! On average, Radiotracker will find the music you want in just 25″ seconds!

Now that is how the full version works. They have limited the functionality of the free trial so that it does not work as easily as the full version. We reckon that’s a mistake on their part! However, its still worth giving it a trial - after all we get 40 free MP3s of our own choosing for our effort. We liked it.

Just follow our link to download the free trial. And let us know what YOU think of it!
